Amitabh Bachchan comes from a rich legacy of literature and poetry. He is the son of Harvanshrai and Teji Bachchan. The angry young man of 1970s, Amitabh has had a long innings in the film industry. He was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Amitabh used to work in Calcutta as a freight broker, but gave that up to pursue a career in acting. He made his debut in 1969 film, Saat Hindustani. Even though the film bombed at the box office, Bachchan won the best newcomer award at the National Awards. 1973 onwards Amitabh made a steady climb towards popularity with films like Zanjeer, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Deewar, Sholay and Amar Akbar Anthony. In 1982, a serious injury on the sets of Coolie resulted in Amitabh spending months in the hospital battling for his life. Following this, Amitabh quit films to enter politics. However, this break from films was temporary. Although he won the 8th Lok Sabha election from Allahabad by a thumping majority, his political career soon hit a rough patch. He had to resign within three years due to his alleged involvement in the ‘Bofors’ scandal. He was recently found not guilty. Bachchan acted in a few films before temporarily retiring for a few years in the early 90s. he came back as a producer and launched ABCL, a premier entertainment company. None of ABCL productions fared well at the box office and in 1997, a fiasco at the Miss World event to be hosted in India, lead to the company losing millions of rupees. ABCl collapsed in 1997. In the year 2000, he made a comeback by appearing on a television show that changed the landscape of his career and that of Indian television industry. Bachchan has been enjoying success, prominence and power since 2000.
